On the Road Again...

August 28, 2013

Planning a family vacation road trip this summer? The best way to stay healthy on the road is to plan ahead and be organized. Having a list of food items you will need for healthy snacks and meals is the first task. Once you have your food items you will want to plan out your meals and snacks for each day you will be on the road. Don’t forget you will need a cooler for your fresh food items to avoid spoilage and food borne illnesses, and remember to place your cooler in the backseat instead of the trunk because it tends to remain cooler in this area, especially if the air conditioning is on.

Try and pack foods that are easy-to-transport and fit into snack bags. Make homemade trail mix that includes power antioxidants from a variety of nuts and dried fruits. Popcorn or kettle corn with different seasonings can also be a healthy snack option. Other options include:

  • single serve applesauce,
  • fruits,
  • and string cheese.

Some other ideas are fresh sliced veggies, peanut butter sandwiches, and fresh whole fruits like bananas and apples.  Remember is to clean your hands before snacking. At rest stops, restrooms are available for hand washing. Otherwise, hand sanitizer or moist toilettes could be used for the whole group.
