June 23, 2014

blueberriesMaking smoothies is an awesome way to get in your servings of fruits and vegetables, and you can add any combination you like! Summertime allows for some of the best tasting berries, which means it’s the perfect time to cool off with a refreshing berry smoothie! Check out these recipes for ideas, and make swaps for different fruits and vegetables. Make it however you like it!

Triple Berry Smoothie

  • 2 ½ cups fat-free vanilla yogurt
  • 1 cup blueberries, rinsed and drained
  • ½ cup raspberries, rinsed and drained
  • ½ cup blackberries, rinsed and drained
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax seed (a great source of fiber!)
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons honey for a sweeter smoothie; 1 medium banana for a thicker smoothie (a good idea if you use milk in place of yogurt)

Put all ingredients in the blender. Mix on high speed until smooth, about one minute. Pour and serve.

Variations: Use any combination of berries. You can use frozen berries if you prefer. To reduce calories, use fat-free plain, unsweetened yogurt.

Blueberry Avocado Green Smoothie

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 ripe avocado, pitted and sliced
  • 2 heaping cups spinach
  • 1 tablespoon agave
  • 1 cup ice

Put all ingredients in the blender and blend until creamy and smooth. Serve and enjoy!

Note: You can swap out the blueberries for your favorite berry. If using frozen fruit, you do not need to add ice.
