The Composed Commuter

January 24, 2014

Traffic jam in snowy conditionsDoes traffic tie you in knots? While you cannot control what other drives do, you can give your own attitude a tune-up.

Take your time. Leaving at the last minute can turn your trip into a nerve-racking race against the clock. Allow plenty of time to reach your destination, so delays are less likely to make you lose control.

Stretch. Sitting in one cramped position for miles can have a negative effect on your mental state. If you notice tension building, stretch your arms, one at a time. To relax your hands, make a fist, release, and then flex your fingers.

Reframe your thoughts. When another drive makes an inconsiderate or unsafe maneuver, consider that the person might be rushing a child to the emergency room or was surprised by a buzzing insect in the car. Imagining yourself in a similar situation makes it easier to forgive others for their mistakes.
