Ghost Trick or TreaterJack-O-Lanterns are lit, the candy is on the porch, and the streets are…empty?

If you miss seeing little ones in costumes and face paint, consider a different approach to Halloween.

  • Look for a “Trunk or Treat.” Malls and churches often host supervised trick-or-treating in parking lots or large interior spaces.
  • Make Friends. Children may bypass your house simply because they’ve been told not to bother strangers. Before the holiday, let your neighbors with young children know that you’ll be glad to “treat” them.
  • Volunteer to Haunt. Did you know more than 80 percent of haunted houses benefit a charity or nonprofit organization? If you want to play some “tricks” on Halloween, see if any local churches or other groups operate a haunted house where you can volunteer.

Children and adults alike look forward to Halloween goodies, from candied apples to candy corn. Halloween treats can be both fun and healthy. Try these riffs on old standbys for family and friends:

Many parents won’t let their children eat unpackaged foods on Halloween. Nutritious, tamper-free give away foods include prepackaged raisins, trail mix, and pretzels. If those don’t strike you as snazzy, try non-food treats such as Halloween erasers, bouncy  balls, plastic spider rings, and rubber snakes.
