September 30, 2005

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 4.4 million nonfatal injuries and illnesses were reported in private industry workplaces during 2003, a rate of five case per 100 full-time workers.

To better respond to the medical needs of local business and industry, KishHealthSystem and Corporate Medical Clinic have joined to form Kishwaukee Corporate Health.

Located on Commerce Drive , DeKalb, Kishwaukee Corporate Health provides occupational health, and alcohol and drug testing services at one convenient location.

“Promoting a healthy working environment and overall employee health and well-being prevents injuries and illnesses on the job and reduces workers' compensation claims as well as health-related expenses,” said Shelly Johnson, Kishwaukee Corporate Health Certified Occupational Health Nurse. “Companies that promote employee health develop strong relationships with their employees by acknowledging that they are the company's single most important investment.”
Doctors Patrick Gannon, Medical Director; Larry Wellendorf and Christine Giacomin, offer area businesses and their employees care for work injuries, health screenings, post job offer tests and physical exams, including audio and vision screening, pulmonary function testing, electrocardiograms and lab work.

Kim Engstrom, Alcohol and Drug Testing Services Coordinator, and her staff of qualified collectors, provide 24-hour, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing as well as drug and alcohol awareness training. The staff at Kishwaukee Corporate Health also assists area employers to develop drug free workplace policies and procedures.

Physical Therapist Dennis Nink specializes in work related issues including injuries, work hardening, ergonomics, and work station and task evaluations. He has over 20 years experience in the art and science of injury recovery and prevention. In addition to physical therapy, he is also available for on-site evaluations of specific jobs and tasks, as well as staff and management education.

Kishwaukee Corporate Health benefits companies far beyond preventing accidents or providing flu shots. “ We focus on getting employees back to work as quickly and safely as possible. Furthermore, employees become loyal and productive when they know that their company is genuinely concerned about their health,” Johnson said.
A strong return to work program benefits both the employer and the employee, she said. The employer reduces worker’s compensation payments and premiums, maintains productive worker time, and reduces employee replacement costs. The employee maintains contact with their co-workers and feels a sense of value to the company. The routine of work is also maintained.

The new office is located at 3251 Commerce Drive in DeKalb, across from Kishwaukee Community Hospital. To make an appointment for alcohol and drug testing, call (815) 748-8332. For all other appointments, call (815) 754-4882.
