Kishwaukee Health Foundation Plans Portugal Trip

November 02, 2005

PortugalFor more than a decade, the Kishwaukee Health Foundation’s Travel Committee has sponsored travel experiences for the community that have received rave reviews and provided benefits to local health systems. The unique travel adventure being announced for 2006 is “Exploring Portugal”, (September 14 to 24, 2006), with a preview party for interested persons on November 11.

This tour will feature a two-night stay in Lisbon and then an eight-day Uniworld cruise on a new luxury riverboat through the historic and beautiful Duoro Valley. This entire region is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as is Salamanca (the locale for a shore excursion over the border into Spain).

The public is invited to a preview party on Friday, November 11, from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Kishwaukee Community Hospital’s Murphy Education Center, Room A/B. Full details will be available at the meeting. A Uniworld representative will be present, and refreshments will be served. For preview party reservations please call Don Buckner at 815-756-4044 or Nancy Vidlak at 815-748-9954.

Early booking discounts will be available through November 30. One hundred dollar previous Uniworld traveler discount are also available

The Douro River has carved a spectacularly wild and scenic valley through the Portuguese Highlands. Its superb Mediterranean microclimate climate is ideal for the cultivation of vineyards which are terraced creatively on the hills. The valley is the world’s oldest wine producing region and the home of the famous port wine since the 7th century.

Here is how one previous Uniworld Douro traveler describes her experience: “In the past we have had delightful cruises on the Rhine, Danube, Rhone and Saone. We wondered if the Douro River could ’measure up’ to our past journeys. Did it ever! We now call the Douro River the best-kept secret in Europe. This is a trip I will repeat in the future in the fall of the year during the wine harvest”

Reservations include roundtrip air, eight-day river cruise, all meals on the cruise, two hotel nights in Lisbon, package shore excursions, transfers, airline and port taxes, round-trip transportation to the airport, travel insurance and a donation to the Kishwaukee Health Foundation.

Exploring Portugal is sponsored by: the Travel Committee of the Kishwaukee Health Foundation to benefit DeKalb County Hospice, Kishwaukee Community Hospital and Valley West Community Hospital.
