July 07, 2006

Valley West Hospital Auxiliary awarded a total of $9000 in scholarships this year to qualified recipients pursuing careers in allied health fields. This year’s total represents almost double the amount awarded in recent years.

Winners were: Deborah Franzone of Sheridan, Nursing at Waubonsee Community College; Betsy Hohimer of Plano, Physical therapy at Northern Illinois University; Tiffany Shelton of Sandwich, Medical Technology at Northern Illinois University; Katherine Bohnstedt of Sheridan, Nursing at Loyola University/ Chicago; and Jaclyn Adkins of Somonauk, nursing at Waubonsee Community College.

To be eligible, winners must live in the hospital’s service area and be accepted into a program of professional training for one of the allied health fields. Preparatory years and years of prerequisite classes before admission to the professional programs do not qualify for scholarship grants. Previous winners have  received scholarships  for degrees in Radiology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy,  Speech Pathology, Respiratory Therapy and others.

The Valley West Auxiliary raises funds for the scholarships and other hospital  equipment purchases through their biennial Dinner/Dance/Auction, Holiday Bazaar, Book and Uniform sales, and other events. Auxiliary members also serve as in house volunteers in areas such as emergency room, patient registration, medical records, physician clinic and gift shop.
