Valley West Community Hospital Honors Employees During National Healthcare Week

Valley West Community Hospital employees have been recognized for their years of service to the hospital. Employees who have worked 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10 and 5 years were honored at the annual KishHealth System Employee Recognition Banquet May 1514. 

Mike Muzzillo, Valley West Assistant Administrator, was recognized for 35 years of service. Muzzillo has actually been associated with the hospital in Sandwich for 45 years, having worked for a private laboratory his first 10 years that covered hospitals in Indiana, Michigan and Illinois, including Sandwich. He officially joined the staff of Sandwich Community Hospital in 1974, as chief medical technologist, progressing to director of Clinical and Ancillary Services then Assistant Administrator.  Muzzillo served on numerous boards, such as DeKalb County Blood Bank, the International Society of Clinical Laboratory Technology as President for three different terms, and currently is the chair of the Board of Registry of the American Association of Bioanalysts. He currently is a board officer on the Sandwich Economic Development Commission and a board member of the Plano Economic Development Commission. Muzzillo also authored and co-authored several clinical laboratory study guides and received many merit and outstanding achievement awards throughout his career. The highlight was receiving the Dr. Stanley Reitman Distinguished Merit Award from the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technology. He also found time to serve as a clinical laboratory consultant for clinical labs throughout the country for several national hospital management companies, and to earn his Doctor of Science degree. Looking back on his career thus far Muzzillo says, “I am very fortunate to have had the honor and privilege to work with so many outstanding, knowledgeable, dedicated, and caring physicians, administrators, colleagues, and associates from all departments of the hospital over my many years at Sandwich Community and Valley West Community Hospital. I know that one day in the future, the most difficult time in my life will come when retirement calls and I must leave the staff and associates.”

Nancy Dahm, Pharmacy Technician, was honored for 30 years of service to the hospital. Dahm working as a pharmacy aid in the beginning of her high school senior year and has worked here since.  “Many of my colleagues have watched me transition over the years from a high school kid to now a glowing grandmother,” Dahm says. Dahm is now a certified pharmacy technician at Valley West Community Hospital. Aside from her duties as a pharmacy tech, Nancy has also kept busy being involved in various hospital activities including the former employee activity committee, CPR instructor, Studer Inpatient Satisfaction Team, Heart of the Hospital campaign, and even biking 150 miles to raise funds for American Heart Association. Looking at her career that has spanned the last 30 years, Nancy says “We have mourned our losses and celebrated our joys in life together as one big caring family. My colleagues aren’t just healthcare professionals. They aren’t just friends. They’re very good people who are here to make our patients well in a caring, professional manner. I enjoy working here because I feel I am making a difference!”

Kathy Kuppler, Health Information Management, was honored for 25 years of service. Kuppler works as a Medical Transcriptionist. “Since working at Valley West I’ve made many new friends who are all dedicated employees, not only in Medical Records, but throughout the system,” Kuppler says.  

Twenty-year honorees: Penny Baker, Human Resources; Brad Copple, Administration. Fifteen-year honoree: Jana Kingston, Volunteer Services; August Kramer, Maintenance; and Diane Norman, Laboratory. 

Five-year honorees were Cynthia Cave, Emergency Medical Services; Michael Fletcher, Cardio Pulmonary; Crystal Hensley, Housekeeping; Paula Hying, Cardio Pulmonary; Dawn Lomax, Emergency Department; Mary Miller, House Supervision; Ornela Mussa, Patient Access; and Nora Reyes, Food & Nutrition Services.
