Kish Hospital Launches Community Laboratory Outreach Program

at the hospital April 25 for the KishHealth Laboratories.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital has launched a community laboratory outreach program designed to serve physicians and patients in the community. The outreach program, KishHealth Laboratories, provides laboratory testing for local physicians under the direction of Dr. Krishna Reddy, MD, Laboratory Medical Director; and Dorrie Kasmar, Laboratory Administrative Director.

In conjunction with National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, DeKalb and Sycamore Chambers of Commerce assisted with a ribbon cutting for the new service April 25.

Currently, local physicians and healthcare providers outsource many lab services to various commercial vendors. This can result in unnecessary fragmentation of the healthcare delivery system and increases total episode-of-care costs to the provider and ultimately to patients.

“Increased utilization of the hospital’s lab services supports a model of fully-integrated, community-based healthcare, which helps everyone achieve better patient outcomes,” said Kasmar. “Accuracy and timeliness result in reduced care costs and improved patient satisfaction.”

KishHealth Laboratories offers physicians and their patients local laboratory testing, fast turnaround time for results, excellent customer service and access to KishHealth laboratory professionals and specialized consultations. Future plans for the program includes electronic health record connectivity for lab results. This will continue to foster collaboration between providers and the health system to coordinate efficient and effective patient care.

“Laboratory outreach, like the services offered through KishHealth Laboratories, benefits the community physicians through continuity of care, reduced test duplication, and local customer service and support,” said Jennifer Bennett, KishHealth Laboratories Outreach Coordinator.

In 2008, KishHealth System chose Mayo Medical Laboratories, the reference laboratory for Mayo Clinic, as its reference laboratory for Kishwaukee Community Hospital and Valley West Community Hospital. This collaboration provides the new KishHealth Laboratories access as well to Mayo Clinic physicians and scientists in every specialty laboratory for consultation regarding test selection, utilization and methodologies, and result interpretation. “This is above and beyond our current on-site staff of experts within pathology, histology, microbiology, chemistry, hematology, serology, and gynecological cytology,” Kasmar said.
