Gastroenterologists Join Kish Hospital Staff

Three board-certified gastroenterologists have recently begun private practices in the community and have joined the staff of Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

Dr. David Manuel of Digestive Health Center is practicing at 3251 Commerce Dr, DeKalb; and Dr. Raza Hamdani and Kashyap “Kash” Katwala of Advanced Gastroenterology are practicing together at 2128 Midlands Court, Sycamore. 

Gastroenterologists (GIs) specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, pancreas, gallbladder and liver.

Dr. David ManuelDr. Manuel previously practiced three years in Oak Park, and is the author of eMedicine and Webmd articles on food poisoning, and acute and chronic megacolon. Megacolon is an enlargement of the colon that can have serious health risks. He also is an affiliate faculty member at Loyola University's Stritch School of Medicine.

He attended medical school at American University of the Caribbean in the British West Indies and completed his residency and GI fellowship at Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield, MI. 

Advanced Gastroenterology, which began in Yorkville three years ago, recently expanded to the DeKalb community.

Dr. Hamdani has been practicing for 16 years, and previously served as an assistant professor of medicine at the Loyola University Medical Center, where he helped launch the liver transplant program. He also was associate director of liver diseases and liver transplantation at the Southern New Jersey Regional Transplantation Center, where he led the program to national certification. He currently is a clinical assistant professor with the Department of Medicine at University of Illinois.

He attended medical school at the College of Medicine University of Lagos, Nigeria, and completed his residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He completed his fellowships in digestive diseases, critical care and gastroenterology at Yale University, University of Pittsburgh and University of Iowa.

Dr. Katwala has more than six years of experience in caring for patients with complex gastroenterology problems. In addition to the general practice of gastroenterology, he brings to the medical staff expertise in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), an endoscopic procedure that identifies stones, tumors, or narrowing in the bile ducts.

He previously practiced in Madison, WI, where he was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. He attended medical school at State University of New York (SUNY), and completed his residency and a fellowship in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood.

Dr. Hamdani and Dr. Katwala are also on staff at sister hospital, Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich.
