Valley West's Diabetes Education Center Awarded State Grant

August 2, 2011

The Diabetes Education Center at Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich has been awarded one of 14 Chronic Disease Prevention Grants from the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN). The grant money will fund a diabetes education program focused on providing low income families with practical healthy food information. The goal is to educate participants on making healthy food choices on a limited budget in order to maintain target blood sugar levels.

The program will provide hands-on diabetes education to 16 qualified participants within Valley West’s service area. Participants will be required to attend six class sessions focusing on blood glucose monitoring and understanding nutrition. They will also be provided with realistic challenges: such as taking $50 of food and creating a menu and the hands-on making of a breakfast, lunch, dinner meal, and snacks. The course culminates with a celebration dinner in the Valley West cafeteria. Class dates have not been scheduled yet.

Medical costs of those with diabetes are approximately 2.3 times higher than the medical expenditures for people without diabetes. The programs aim is to decrease direct medical costs through lifestyle intervention.
