Mike MuzzilloOn June 28, Mike Muzzillo, Valley West Vice President of Operations, retired. He officially joined the staff of Sandwich Community Hospital in 1974, as chief medical technologist, progressing to director of Clinical and Ancillary Services then Assistant Administrator, and finally as Vice President of Operations.

The accomplishments at Valley West these past 14 years would not have been possible without Mike’s leadership. They include:

  • New programs such as Sleep Lab, Pain Clinic, Diabetes Education, Dialysis, Medical Oncology Department; Counseling and Psychiatry, and Community Wellness with enhanced relationships with local businesses and school;
  • New and upgraded technology including CT, MRI, and EEG; enhanced physician services including Hospitalist, expanded coverage for anesthesia, surgery and emergency pediatrics;
  • Added 24 hour coverage for Lab, Radiology, Pharmacy and Respiratory;
  • Two facility expansions, Medical Office Building construction, purchase of 30 acres for further campus expansion, life safety improvements, routine capital expenditures, and physician recruitment.

In his letter of resignation Mike said, “I have come to a bittersweet moment in my life and career like no other that I can recall.”

Mike has also served on numerous boards, such as DeKalb County Blood Bank, the International Society of Clinical Laboratory Technology as president for three different terms, and currently is the chair of the Board of Registry of the American Association of Bioanalysts. He also served as a board officer on the Sandwich Economic Development Commission and a board member of the Plano Economic Development Commission.

Looking back on his career thus far Mike says, “I am very fortunate to have had the honor and privilege to work with so many outstanding, knowledgeable, dedicated, and caring physicians, administrators, colleagues, and associates from all departments of the hospital over my many years at Sandwich Community and Valley West Community Hospital. My commitment and longevity are a testament to the wonderful human beings that have made up this hospital over the many years and their desire, tenacity, endurance, and commitment to the patients and other hospital family members.”

In a letter to health system employees, President Brad Copple said, “I want to add my thanks to Mike for his leadership and friendship.  Valley West will not be the same after he and Jenelle roll off in their motor home this time. On behalf of the entire KishHealth System family, I wish them both the best in their retirement.”

Dave Proulx succeeds Mike as Assistant Vice President of Operations and health system facilities. Dave has been director of Engineering, Biomedical Services and Security at Kishwaukee Community Hospital since 2002, and has excelled in managing construction projects, including the construction of the new Kish hospital and cancer centers. He has been deeply involved in the planning for the Valley West campus and will provide valuable leadership as the health system moves forward with Valley West’s new patient wing.
