Kish Hospital Joint Center Recognized for Quality & Growth

KishHealth System honors employees and staff at annual banquet


David Smith, Joint Center CoordinatorDeKalb, IL – The Kishwaukee Community Hospital Joint Center was recognized for quality and growth May 13, at the annual KishHealth System Employee Recognition Banquet at Barsema Alumni & Visitors Center, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb.

The health system presents annual awards of excellence for the Growth Pillar, Quality Pillar, Service Pillar, People Pillar, Finance Pillar, and Can Do Attitudes.

The Growth Pillar Award recipients were Joint Center Coordinator Dave Smith and the Joint Center team including inpatient physical therapists and Medical/Surgical, Operating Room and Pre-Op nursing staffs

“The Joint Center is a Center of Excellence, driven by quality and patient satisfaction,” said Joe Dant, vice president of Business Development for KishHealth System, who presented the award. The concept and framework for the Joint Center was brought to Kish Hospital by consultant Marshall Steele & Associates. The Kish program has met or exceeded Marshall Steele’s national goals.

“The patient experience is paramount in the success of this new service. And all those involved in creating this experience are to be commended,” Dant said.
Joint Center accomplishments, include:

  • 648 total joint replacements over the past three years;
  • Length of stay dropping from 3.4 days to 2.42 days;
  • 93% patients discharged home vs. a rehab center vs. 66% of patients discharged home before the program began.
  • Very low complication rate of 0.7% in 2012.

The Quality Pillar Award also focused on the Joint Center, specifically a multidisciplinary team that involved surgical services, environmental services, infection control and quality.

Recipients of the award were the multidisciplinary team of David Smith, Joint Center coordinator; Lisa Ackland, RN, Surgical Services director; Teresa Holliday, RN, Infection Control coordinator; Deb Scott, RN, Surgical Services clinical lead; Deb Paulin, RN, Surgical Services clinical development coordinator, and Vince Landeros, Environmental Services director.

Valley West Emergency Department

Service—Valley West Emergency Department for being in the 90th percentile in patient satisfaction as measured by a phone survey of patients after discharge, conducted by HealthStream, an independent research company. This consistent accomplishment means the Valley West ER is in the top one percent of the 400 hospitals in HealthStream’s database.

Kish Hospital Cancer Registrar Susan McFarlandPeople--Kish Hospital Cancer Registrar Susan McFarland for her accuracy in compiling data on cancer patients, writing reports and communicating effectively with the physicians and Cancer Committee that has helped the hospital earn and maintain its accreditation from the Commission on Cancer every three years.



KishHealth System financial counselors and interpretersFinance—KishHealth System financial counselors and interpreters who work with uninsured patients to help them qualify for charity care in keeping with our mission, vision and values that incorporate doing what’s best for patients and the community. This past year, 3,317 patients at Kish Hospital and 681 patients at Valley West, received this help. Providing this service helps both hospitals maintain their non-profit hospital property tax exemption.
