Kish Hospital Earns Gold Seal of Approval™

May 22, 2013

DeKalb, IL – Earlier this year, Kishwaukee Community Hospital received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval by demonstrating adherence with The Joint Commission’s national standards for healthcare quality and safety in hospitals. The accreditation awarded recognizes Kish Hospital’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s standards. The Kish Hospital survey comes on the heels of a successful survey last fall at their sister facility, Valley West Community Hospital, in Sandwich.

“With Joint Commission accreditation, we are making a significant investment in quality on a day-to-day basis throughout our organization. Joint Commission accreditation provides us with a framework to take KishHealth System to the next level and helps reinforce our culture of excellence,” said Dr. Michael Kulisz, KishHealth System chief medical officer.

Kish Hospital underwent a rigorous and unannounced four-day survey. The team of Joint Commission surveyors: a physician, a nurse, and facility inspector, evaluated Kish Hospital for compliance with standards of care specific to the care of the patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership, medication management, and overall safety within the hospital environment. The Joint Commission’s hospital standards address important functions relating to the care of patients and the management of hospitals. The standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts, providers, measurement experts and patients.

“There is an amazing amount of healthcare quality data available to the public,” said Karen Black, RN, KishHealth System director of quality. “There are many surveys, review sites, and grading information presented online. We believe that because The Joint Commission comes on-site to judge our quality and not just review what is reported, that their survey data is the most reliable because it’s the most current, and the most in-depth.”

Because of KishHealth System’s commitment to providing the highest quality of care, Kish Hospital takes part in a number of thorough survey and accreditation processes in addition to the triennial Joint Commission survey. Earlier this year the hospital’s main laboratory received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). This national recognition ensures the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients. More recently, Kish Hospital received a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomography (CT) as the result of a review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety.

Kish Hospital also participates in additional national benchmark surveys throughout the year, and has been doing so for more than ten years.
