KishHealth System Recognizes Achievements with Pillar Awards of Excellence

May 22, 2014

DEKALB, Ill. – KishHealth System recognized employees, teams, and departments who have demonstrated significant achievements toward the health system’s organizational goals in the areas of Service, People, Quality, Finance, and Growth at the 12th annual Employee Recognition Banquet, May 12, at the Duke Ellington Ballroom, Northern Illinois University.

It was the eighth year for the Pillar Awards of Excellence that recognize those who show sustainability of results, a one-time major organizational contribution that has a major impact on a Pillar with above and beyond performance. All are role models of KishHealth System’s values and standards of behavior that were selected by a committee comprised of Administration, Human Resources, and Service Excellence.

Valley West Hospital Food & Nutrition ServicesService Pillar Award

KishHealth System presented the Service Pillar Award to the Valley West Hospital Food & Nutrition Services Department. Over the past year, the department has introduced many positive changes that benefit patients and employees on a daily basis, including serving hot breakfast in the cafeteria and starting a new patient room service option. Their employee satisfaction scores have improved and they are sustaining them at 95% - a great accomplishment for their department.

Valley West Hospital Surgical ServicesQuality Pillar Award

The Quality Pillar Award was presented to the Surgical Services Department at Valley West Hospital. The Surgical Services Department at Valley West Hospital, as with all areas of the health system, looks for ways to improve and to promote quality. The department reviewed department policies and procedures, identified areas of improvement, and implemented changes. In fiscal year 2013, and 2014 thus far, the department’s core measures scores related to the Quality Pillar were consistently 99-100% for each quarter. These scores demonstrate this department’s consistency and high level of commitment to quality, to their patients and to the health system.

Colleen Parks, LCSWPeople Pillar Award

The health system’s People Pillar Award was presented to Colleen Parks, LCSW, manager of KishHealth System Social Services. She has consistently demonstrated excellent leadership skills for a rapidly growing and expanding team across the health system: Kishwaukee and Valley West Hospitals inpatient and outpatient services, both emergency departments, KishHealth System Home Care, and the Cancer Center. Parks has consistently performed above and beyond what is expected of employees, modeling excellent KishHealth System values and standards of behavior.

KishHealth System Materials ManagementFinance Pillar Award

The Finance Pillar Award was presented to Joe Jarocki, director, and Connie Snider, manager, from KishHealth System Materials Management, for their talented efforts in reducing medical supply and capital equipment cost. With continued declining global reimbursement from most third party payers, it has become imperative for KishHealth System to seek out and identify opportunities to reduce operating expenses. Materials Management identified several of these opportunities and cut capital equipment costs for the health system by over one million dollars.

KishHealth System Home CareGrowth Pillar Award

The Growth Pillar Award was presented to KishHealth System Home Care. Last year, KishHealth System purchased the home care service line from the DeKalb County Board of Health when its volumes had dropped significantly over the years due to a large competitor field. With this purchase, the health system was able to continue to provide a needed service to the community. Since the service was transferred to the health system, Home Care’s volumes have tripled and continue to grow. The home care staff has shown continued compassion and commitment as the service line grows.
