SANDWICH, Ill. - The inaugural KishHealth System Physical Therapy Center Hunger 5K Run/Walk was held on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Sandwich Fairgrounds. There was a total of 191 registered participants who took part in the 3.1-mile charity run/walk. The event raised $6,315 with an additional contribution of $3,000 by KishHealth System for a total donation of $9,315 to seven Sandwich area food pantries and Foods Resource Bank.

The overall winner was Jason Zaleski of Yorkville with a time of 21:06. The women’s winner was Rachel Martin of Sycamore who finished second overall in a time of 21:14. Although the event was competitive for a number of runners, it was also meant for each individual to test their personal abilities. Participants ranged in age from 4 to 85.

All participants received a race bag and t-shirt prior to the event and were treated to post race food, water, stretching, music, and raffle prizes supported by 32 local sponsors. “Whenever you put on an event for the first time you don’t quite know what to expect, but the turnout was more than we could have hoped for and the local community was very generous with financial sponsorships, product donations, time, and effort that allowed us to provide an enjoyable experience for all participants as well as the approximately 40 volunteers,” said Chris Laurent, KishHealth System Physical Therapy Center athletic trainer and race committee member. “Due to the strong support we received from both the community and KishHealth System we were able to make this event a success. The local community obviously understands the important role the food pantries play in providing for those less fortunate. For this the Hunger 5K committee and staff at the KishHealth System Physical Therapy Center would like to thank all those who helped and participated,” Laurent added.
