KishHealth System Physical Therapist Receives New Certification

October 26, 2015

Mike Andrews, PTGENOA, Ill. – KishHealth System Physical Therapist Mike Andrews was recently certified by Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) Global in LSVT BIG Treatment Exercise Protocol. For this certification, Andrews completed over twelve hours of coursework allowing him to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions that cause bradykinesia (slow movement) and hypokinesia (small movements). LSVT BIG treatment is a referred treatment from neurologists who look for someone who uses this specialized training. Andrews is currently the only therapist in DeKalb County to offer this treatment. He is based in the KishHealth System Physical Therapy Center at 599 West Pearson Drive, Genoa.

LSVT BIG is a treatment administered in sixteen, one-hour sessions. Sessions are scheduled to be completed over the course of four consecutive days a week for four weeks. The protocol also consists of daily homework practice, daily carryover exercises, and yearly tune-up sessions. This training is aimed at increasing amplitude of limb and body movement in people with Parkinson’s disease. Documented improvements include increased amplitude in trunk rotation and gait, improved speed in both upper and lower limbs, balance, and quality of life. This treatment and protocol is both intensive and complex, with many repetitions of core movements that are used in daily living. For more information about LSVT Global, visit www.lsvtglobal.com.
