SANDWICH, Ill. – The Valley West Hospital Auxiliary recently awarded $12,000 in healthcare career scholarships to deserving students in the area. The following students received a Valley West Auxiliary Healthcare Scholarship: (pictured from left to right with members of the Auxiliary Board) Kaitlyn Rexford, from Earlville, attending Aurora University, pursuing a degree in Nursing; Margaret Fraser, from Sandwich, attending Concordia University Wisconsin, pursuing a degree in Occupational Therapy; Megan Malone, from Newark, attending Illinois Wesleyan University, pursuing a degree in Nursing; and (separate photo) Blair Wright, from Sandwich, attending University of Illinois Chicago, College Of Medicine, pursuing a degree in Medicine. Wright also received the James Henry, MD, Award.  In 1987, Dr. James Henry, Anatomic Pathologist, who now practices in Fairfax, Virginia received a healthcare scholarship from the Sandwich Hospital Auxiliary. Earlier this year he generously donated $2,000 back to the Valley West Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund as a way to pay it forward to assist another healthcare student.

Auxiliary scholarships are available to students who live in a community served by Valley West Hospital, including Sandwich, Plano, Earlville, Somonauk, Leland, Yorkville, Bristol, Sheridan, Serena, Newark, Millington, Millbrook, Big Rock, Hinckley, and Waterman. Students accepted into or currently enrolled in a bona fide professional program of study for any allied healthcare curriculum can be considered for a scholarship. The school attendance need not be at an Illinois institution, but must be accredited and/or recognized as a legitimate institution by an appropriate agency. One-year scholarships may be renewed based on annual application and evaluation.

Photos of the scholarship recipients will be featured at the Valley West Hospital Auxiliary’s booth at the 2016 Sandwich Fair, Sept. 7 through 11. This year’s raffle item will be a large flat screen television. And several framed quilt hangings will be on display for sale. Raffle tickets will be sold for $1 each or six tickets for $5. The drawing will take place at 6 pm on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Auxiliary’s booth.  “All of our fundraising events assist the hospital with special needs and most importantly support our annual scholarship program,” commented Susan White, Auxiliary president. “I thank our membership for all their support, along with all those who lend support by attending our events throughout the year.”
