Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is meant to improve privacy for people receiving healthcare. The federal HIPAA legislation centers on patient rights by assuring the privacy of personal health information. The provisions also give patients more control over who sees their private medical information.

When patients come to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb or Valley West Hospital in Sandwich or any of the other KishHealth System locations, they will be given a Joint Notice of Privacy Practices describing how the facility will use their health information internally and under what circumstances their information will be shared with third parties.

The law does not interfere with the care and treatment of patients, but it does regulate how hospitals can share personal health information with government agencies and third parties.

KishHealth System privacy are in accordance with state law and good medical practice.
