Help Managing AD/HD Medication

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) medications treat symptoms, but do not cure illnesses themselves. The goal of AD/HD medication is to reduce intensity and frequency of symptoms. Research supports that the best treatment for this disorder combines medication management with counseling therapy, if indicated.

Through medication management, your child’s physician monitors his or her response to medication, side effects, dangerous drug interactions, and complications.

Medication management visits are scheduled only if you choose to treat your child’s AD/HD symptoms with medication. In medication management:

  • A nurse discusses symptoms, as well as any possible side effects from the medication
  • Appointments typically last between 20-30 minutes
  • In the beginning, follow-up appointments are more frequent in order to properly evaluate current status, response to treatment, and side effects
  • Concerns are shared with the physician who will adjust medication type or dosage
  • Once dosage is stabilized, usually within the first six months, appointments are required at least three times per year.
