Bone Density Tests in DeKalb and Sandwich

Bone density scanning is an enhanced form of X-ray technology that measures bones and bone loss, which are indications of osteoporosis in both women and men. During a bone density test, the patient lies fully dressed on a padded table while the DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) unit moves and scans the body, most commonly around the hip and spine, without requiring any injections or other invasive procedures. The test only takes a few minutes.

A doctor’s order is required for a bone density test. Often insurance will only cover a bone density test every two years and age restrictions may apply. Please check with your insurance plan before scheduling an appointment.

KishHealth System offers three types of bone density tests:

Axial Bone Density Testing scans the central axis bones of the body including the skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum.

Peripheral Extremity Assessment looks at the bone mineral density of peripheral joints and limbs, such as the elbows, wrists, knees and ankles.

Vertebral Fracture Assessment reviews bone and bone loss of the vertebra in the back and spine for fractures that can lead to an increased risk of future spine or hip fractures.
