Radiation Treatments

3-D Conformal Treatment Planning

Provides computer images to show the size, shape, and location of the tumor, allowing the physician to conform the radiation beams to the tumor’s shape and size.

PET/CT and MRI/CT Fusion

Allows two images to be fused together for more accurate planning and radiation treatment. PET/CT and MRI/CT fusion allows the radiation oncologist to better outline the tumor and localize radiation more efficiently, which in some cases reduces side effects and improves survival.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Provides the ability to decrease or eliminate side effects to surrounding tissues and organs. IMRT may also allow for a higher dose of radiation to the tumor, which may increase the chances of completely destroying the tumor.

Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)

Cancerous tumors and organs can move day to day. For example, how full or empty the bladder and rectum are can change the position of the prostate drastically. IGRT provides for a more precise treatment by using diagnostic imaging, such as ultrasound or x-rays, prior to each radiation treatment. This allows the radiation oncologist to adjust treatment, which can possibly decrease side effects, increase radiation dose to the tumor, and increase the chance for a cure.

Brachytherapy is another cancer treatment option for prostate cancer patients. KishHealth System Cancer Centers is one of the brachytherapy sites in northern Illinois outside of the Chicago area.

What is Brachytherapy?

Brachytherapy works by placing tiny radioactive seeds, about the size of a grain of rice, in the prostate to deliver a potent dose of radiation directly to the cancer site. The seeds’ radioactivity decays over time while the actual seeds remain inside the prostate permanently.

What are the Advantages of Brachytherapy?

  • Safe and effective outpatient alternative to surgical removal of prostate
  • High radiation dose increases the chances of cure
  • Greatly reduces exposure to nearby tissues
  • Fewer side effects
  • Shorter treatment time
